The Do’s of Buying a Backpack
There are six things a person needs to keep in mind when purchasing a backpack. They are pertinent, whether the person is on the market for a school backpack or a technical pack to haul gear on a wilderness adventure.

Do Figure Out Intended Use
This may sound simplistic, but a person should keep in mind the intended use of the backpack. Obviously, laptop bags and backpacks meant to carry around school or work items would not work as a week-long camping trip bag.
Do Consider Weight
This applies especially to technical packs. They can be very streamlined or laden with different pockets and accessory holders. While the latter can be handy and useful, the extra material it takes to construct them can make the pack heavier. Some models utilize special materials designed to keep pack weight down, such as those utilized by GoLite. Of course, better materials increase cost as well. Climbers or skiers might want streamlined and lightweight packs so it does not hamper their activity. Buyers should also be mindful of the backpack's height when full as compared to their own stature. If the pack is too high when filled, it may throw off the user's equilibrium and be too difficult to carry.
Do Consider Useful Accessories
Companies like Osprey make accessories for their technical packs that can both be a blessing and a curse. These can include everything from hydration reservoirs, to additional holders for water bottles, cell phones, and digital cameras. If the accessory is useful to a person, then it is a blessing. However, having a ton of different things hanging off a backpack that are never used can be a curse. In addition to the weight added, it can be a blow to a budget to buy unused accessories.
