What is jerky?
Most of us have come across beef jerky at some point or another - lean, air-dried strips of meat with a chewy texture. Usually salt is added to the meat to preserve and cure it. Most jerky can be found in the snack food aisle at your local supermarket, and some health food stores may stock healthier varieties with reduced sodium levels and fewer additives.
As part of a healthy, well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, jerky is a relatively healthy snack, and it's definitely a better option than crisps, chocolate or salted nuts. Provided you opt for all-natural varieties with reduced sodium and lower levels of saturated fat, jerky is a high-protein snack that's becoming increasingly popular across the UK.
Most consumers of jerky products not only love its health advantages, but they also enjoy its convenience and portability. A nutrient-dense snack is one benefit, however, it's convenience and shelf life is another benefit that keeps many coming back for more. The fact that it has a long shelf life (several months) and that it can be repackaged for later use after being opened makes jerky a great value. This is something that some manufacturers make an effort to address, things such as vacuum sealed packaging and oxygen absorbers or a combination of the two are things to look for when choosing the right jerky.
