Why Cushion Compact Foundation Is a Total Game Changer
What does the cushion itself actually do?
The cushion itself is integral to the performance of the formula. "It transforms the liquid formula into a lighter emulsion," explains director of marketing at Korean skincare brand. Doesn't the sponge get gross if it goes back and forth between your face and the compact?
This used to be a problem, but many of the sponges that come included with the products are anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, meaning the risk of transferring bacteria is pretty low. "The blue applicator sponges you see from brands are made out of rubycell technology, which means it's antimicrobial and antibacterial, That being said, you can never be too sanitary or safe, so feel free to wash your sponges with a mild soap and lukewarm water." Plus, most of the compacts are airtight, so they won't turn into a breeding ground (important, since the combo of dampness and darkness make a happy home for microbes). "The snap-lid over the cushion prevents the formula from drying out," adds Paiva.
Can we use my foundation brush or (clean) fingers instead of the sponge?
Nope. "The applicator sponge wicks off just the right amount of foundation for airbrush-like coverage. It just won't have the same seamless effect if you jab your brush in there. If you're not used to the sponge applicator, try folding it to fit different areas. "Gently pat it while it's flat to smooth over wide areas, like your cheeks," says Barose. "Then, fold in half and use the pointy part to get hard-to-reach areas like the inner corners, under the eyes, and the sides of nose."
