What is a toothbrush sanitizer?
A toothbrush sanitizer is a device designed to kill bacteria on a toothbrush. There are several types of toothbrush sanitizers available: some toothbrush sanitizers use ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy germs, while others use steam and dry heat. Makers of toothbrush sanitizers often claim that these devices eliminate 99% of bacteria on a toothbrush. However, the American Dental Association says that there is no evidence that there's any benefit from using a toothbrush sanitizer.
First, you must recognize that within 8 hours of the first use, the toothbrush becomes contaminated with a wide range of disease-producing germs. The purpose of a toothbrush sanitizer is to reduce the numbers of these microbes. Our laboratory has tested most of the sanitizers on the market and has found the Purebrush to be the most effective. While this ultraviolet light sanitizer dries the toothbrush which reduces the numbers of microbes, it is most effective when the toothbrush is clear; allowing the ultraviolet rays to penetrate and kill the germs.
If the thought of bacteria on your toothbrush makes you squirm, there are steps you can take to prevent against it. Toothbrush sanitizers are electronically powered, home sterilizing machines that steam-clean toothbrushes, then dry them with dry heat, virtually ridding them of any and all existing bacteria. Emjoi makes one, and then there's the Germ Terminator. Brush sanitizers run anywhere and not only will they give you peace of mind but they can extend the life of your toothbrush.
